By default, macOS is designed for maximum power efficiency. It tries to preserve energy as much as possible to prolong your battery life. As a result, when you stop using your Mac for a certain amount of time, it automatically goes to sleep.


macOS has built-in energy saver tools to customize how long your computer should wait before turning off the screen and going to sleep. To adjust these energy-related settings, open the Apple menu and go to System Preferences > Energy Saver or Battery.

The app can prevent your Mac from sleeping by choosing different criteria. You can set a timer, create a per-process schedule for a duration, or choose when a service on another machine is running, say SMB or SSH.


To get started, go through the list of apps with two checkboxes. Tick the Prevent System Sleep to ensure that your Mac does not sleep when an app is running and check the Allow Display Sleep to specify if the display will sleep to preserve energy.


But sometimes, your Mac may face a unique set of problems. It may happen that your machine goes to sleep too fast or stays awake at all times. If this is happening to you, check your logs and take notes before it becomes a major issue.

Despite all of the new entrants into the sleep tracking Apple Watch industry, I still find AutoSleep to be the most powerful option. AutoSleep offers you a lot of data, and you can pick and choose whether to read too much into it.


While knowing how to keep Mac from sleeping and extend its battery life using Endurance is great, you can also make your Mac more energy-efficient by getting rid of everything that clogs its systems and overloads its CPU. Think of all the cache files, user logs, launch agents, mail attachments, and uninstalled applications that drag your Mac performance down. The app Sleep Sounds by Sleep Pillow contains a variety of soothing sounds to help you fall asleep. This app has a simple interface, and each sound option has its own image. Once you tap the image, the sound plays until you stop it. You may also set up a timer that shuts off the sound after a certain amount of time, ranging from one minute to an hour and 15 minutes. The sounds continue playing when the app is minimized, so you can listen while scrolling through other apps.


Sleep Sounds by Sleep Pillow offers multiple upgrade options. To upgrade, you must choose a package of sounds to extend your available sound options. With any upgrade also comes premium features, such as an alarm clock, extended sleep timer options, unlimited mixes, and the removal of ads.


Upgrading to the full account removes banner ads and gives you access to 60 premium sounds. The paid app also offers the ability to create more mixes and incorporate an extra-long fade-out of up to an hour, perfect for falling asleep.


In my opinion, some of the free sounds sounded like they were looping every ten seconds or so, which rendered some sounds less realistic. That said, there were a few free sounds that I loved, including the plastic bag and the cat purring. Surprisingly, the womb sound was the one that ended up lulling me to sleep.


Although Headspace is primarily a meditation app, it also offers a generous selection of sounds to help you sleep. There are very few free options, but Headspace offers a one-week or two-week trial so you can try them out and decide if you wish to purchase the rest. A subscription costs $13 per month or $70 for a year, which is a little steep but you also get access to the meditation features.


The free version of BetterSleep grants access to about a quarter of the sleep sounds. It is feasible to stick with the basic version of the app, but if you have your heart set on a specific sound, or if you find the ads annoying, you might prefer to buy the full version. BetterSleep offers a 7-day free trial period, after which an annual subscription costs $60 for Android and Apple devices.


Apple and macOS long ago became obsessed with reducing the power usage on your Mac, through putting drives to sleep, dimming the display, or going into sleep or hibernate modes. The original reasons were practical: to avoid screen burn-in on a CRT, to reduce wear on hard drives, to produce less heat, or simply to reduce electrical usage for conservation and cost reasons.
